AUSTIN (KXAN) – The city of Austin is preparing to close Zilker Park for about a month as they prepare for the 15th annual Austin City Limits Music Festival.

Starting Monday, the entire park will be closed to the public until Oct. 14.

Many of those who regularly visit the park say they aren’t thrilled about it being closed for so long.

“I feel like that’s just a really big inconvenience for families that look for the park as a nice escape for the family to go to rather than have to drive to a theme park or something to keep their children entertained,” said Jasmina Tokic.

However, the city says closing the park is unavoidable. Beginning Monday crews will gather at the park to prepare for one of Austin’s largest music festivals.

“Each year they do preventative items that you see in the park, such as decking under vendors, proactive mulching under the trees,” said Jason Maurer with Austin’s Park and Recreation department.

After the first weekend ends, they go back out to make sure the park is spotless by the time music fans are allowed back in. After the second weekend, it takes several days to once again clean up and re-open to the public.

For those looking for a place to relax while the park is closed, the city says there are many other options. “The pool stays open the entire time, parts of the park reopens during the festival such as the rugby field and then we have also a wonderful renovation at auditorium shores,” said Maurer.

The park will re-open to the public on Friday, Oct. 14 for just over a week. That’s when part of Zilker Park will close again to prepare for the Trail of Lights.
