AUSTIN (KXAN) — Several students at Westwood High School in northwest Austin found a gun on campus when they arrived at the school Wednesday morning.
According to a letter sent to parents, the gun was found on the corner of the satellite practice field near Lake Creek Parkway. The students who found the gun brought it to a coach who was standing outside the school. The principal said the school immediately reported the discovery to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office. “We commend these students for their actions and want to share with our Westwood community that it is a collective effort to keep our campus environment the safest one possible,” continued in the letter.
The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office says the gun found was a semi-automatic 380 pistol with three live rounds. The agency is checking the weapon’s serial number to see if they can determine who the gun belongs to.
The school’s principal wants to remind students to report anything suspicious to an adult on campus and contact them immediately “if they believe a stranger or fellow student has brought a weapon” to the campus.
