AUSTIN (KXAN) — A group of volunteers spent Sunday morning on the lake, but they weren’t boating, fishing or skiing.
Instead, scuba divers, shoreline walkers and paddle boarders were in the water starting at 8 a.m. cleaning up trash from the lake and surrounding Travis County parks.
The annual cleanup event was started in 1994 by a team of divers and reminds people that “trash travels” and impacts the fun that can be had on the lake.
“The event is about more than trash pickup,” Colorado River Alliance’s executive director Brent Lyles said. “It is about protecting vital aquatic habitats and supporting the entire Lake Travis community and downstream communities.”
The cleanup was followed by a thank you party for the volunteers that included a live DJ, door prizes and lunch.
The annual cleanup is put on by the Colorado River Alliance and Keep Austin Beautiful with the help of volunteers from many local businesses, organizations and churches.
