New downtown hotels make for better game day experience

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Although traffic may still be a headache in Austin for UT home games, those traveling in to watch the game are having an easier time finding a hotel. A big part of that is the increase in hotel rooms in just the past four year.

“We’re actually all from New York and we came down here today to watch the UT game,” said UT tailgate attendee Mike Gold.

In just the past four years the number of hotel rooms in the Austin area has increased by almost 50 percent. Those visiting say they’ve noticed. “It was just super easy to get in,” said Gold.

Since 2012 the downtown skyline has seen quite the change. New hotels have helped spike the number of rooms for visitors from 6,050 to 8,568.

“There’s enough hotels to accommodate people and I think they have been doing a good job of keeping up with the amount of people coming in to Austin to visit,” said Austin resident Scott Hill.

Locals like Hill and his friends say that with the increase of hotels, the issue of finding a place to stay has been corrected; now it’s time for the city to catch up in other areas.

“The hotels are great; we have a great airport we can bring in as many people that we want, but we actually don’t have enough infrastructure to support a lot of the things that are happening in the city,” said Hill

Proving the game day experience can become even better with time.

The Convention and Visitors Bureau says football season can present challenges in bringing some conventions to the city. They say organizers skip Austin in the fall, partially because of football, but also because big events like ACL and F1 tie up a lot of rooms. However, the Bureau says filling hotels is always beneficial for the city.
