Cesar Chavez St. construction aims to reduce traffic

Detours in place until September (Dugan/KXAN)

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A big change is kicking off on Friday for West Cesar Chavez Street.

The construction is aimed to help drive times in the area known for congestion. The improvements will also help safety issues near the North Lamar Bridge.

Drivers on eastbound Cesar Chavez will not be able to make a left turn onto Sandra Muraida Way. This is the road many people take to connect to North Lamar. The city now wants drivers to take a left on Walter Seaholm Drive, then another left on West 2nd Street, which connects to North Lamar.

The City Transportation Department says the changes will help with backups and reduce delays by 20 percent.
