AUSTIN (KXAN) — The community will have the chance to honor the fallen Austin police officer who died from his injuries on Sunday after he was hit by a car in the line of duty.
The memorial service for Officer Amir Abdul-Khaliq is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. at the Wilhelmina Delco Center, at 4601 Pecan Brook Dr. Following the service will be full Police Honors outside the Delco Center.
Police warn there will be heavy traffic in the area during the memorial.
The Greater Austin Crime Commission has established the Amir Abdul-Khaliq Family Fund to accept donations on behalf of his family. Officer Abdul-Khaliq was one of three APD motorcycle officers escorting a funeral procession on Sept. 1, 2016. The officer was going northbound on Burnet Road near Ohlen Road when a driver tried to cut through the funeral procession and turned into the officer.
Abdul-Khaliq died four days later. A press release was issued by the department at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday stating, “Despite his valiant fight, it is with deep and heavy hearts that early this evening Senior Police Officer Amir Abdul-Khaliq succumbed to his injuries.”
