SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — A group gathered in San Marcos Tuesday night to protest the proposed construction of an HEB grocery store.

The new HEB would be located at the corner of Hunter Road and Wonder World Drive, across from the Purgatory Creek natural area.

Several people showed up at Tuesday’s City Council meeting to ask council members to send the proposal back to the planning and zoning commission.

Protest organizer Jennifer Fischer said, “We think that its’ important for them to remember that there are other properties, even within a stone’s throw, that would be very suitable and would be less of an environmental impact.”

“I think it’s important to say that our ecosystem is worth sacrificing the comfort of having a big grocery store just down the street versus the little HEB that is very convenient for most of us on this side of town,” Fischer said in a July interview. The property is near the Edwards Aquifer Recharge zone.

City council is expected to vote on Sept. 20. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
