AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Heart Hospital of Austin is offering free heart screenings for student athletes ages 14 through 18 on Saturday.

The screening will include a 12-lead electrocardiogram (EKG) and a limited two-dimensional echocardiogram, or ultrasound of the heart, to detect hypertropic cardiomyopathy (HCM).

HCM is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes, the Heart Hospital said in a statement. It affects one in 500 student athletes every year, often without any warning or symptoms.

While relatively easy to detect, it can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated.

An EKG takes about five minutes and is a painless and non-invasive screening tool. A cardiologist will review results of the screening immediately after the tests.

Appointments are required. A questionnaire must also be filled out upon arrival.

The Heart Hospital of Austin is located at 3801 N. Lamar Blvd. and the testing will be held from 8 a.m. to noon. To schedule an appointment visit StDavids.com/youngheart or call 512-478-3627.
