Michael Phelps could make Rio debut; Katie Ledecky, Dana Vollmer in swimming action
Phelps is expected to be part of the U.S. men’s 4x100m freestyle relay team that will contend for a gold medal. It would be Phelps’ first race of the Rio Games. Phelps was part of the 4x100m relay team that won gold in thrilling and historic fashion at the 2008 Beijing Games over a favored French team, before the French returned the favor in 2012.
Ledecky has her eyes set on the first of what could be three individual gold medals for her in Rio as she competes in the women’s 400m freestyle final, a race in which she is a two-time world champion. Vollmer will look to bring a medal to the United States as well in the final of the women’s 100m butterfly, an event in which she is the reigning Olympic gold medalist.
U.S. women’s gymnasts compete in qualifications
Big things are expected of the United States women’s gymnasts, and it begins on Day 2 with qualifications. Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas return to their second Games to join three-time defending world all-around champion Simone Biles, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian on a team that’s a heavy favorite for gold in the team competition. Biles, the favorite for all-around gold, looks to punch her ticket to the final, and all five members of the team have eyes on spots in apparatus finals.
Diving gets underway in Rio
The first diving competiton of these Olympics — the women’s 3m synchronized springboard final — airs in primetime on Sunday night. The U.S. did not qualify a team in the event, but history could be made by China’s Wu Minxia, who can set a record for the most career gold medals in history by a single diver as she competes with partner Shi Tingmao.
