NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (KXAN) — A teenager drowned in the Guadalupe River Wednesday afternoon while tubing the river with a friend.
At around 4:45 p.m., New Braunfels police and the fire department were called to the river near the 1100 block of Gruene Road for reports of a drowning.
David Akinropo, 17, of Converse, was floating in the river when he fell out of his tube, briefly struggled to stay afloat and then went under the water, police say.
Firefighters entered the water and were able to locate Akinropo in the river near Sleepy Hollow Drive. Lifesaving measures were attempted on the teen and he was rushed to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital New Braunfels, where he was pronounced dead.
His family has been notified. Police say there are no signs of foul play and his death is believed to be accidental. According to the City of New Braunfels, the Guadalupe River is running around 430 cfs.
During the Fourth of July weekend, a man drowned in the Comal River while he was swimming with friends.
