Officials say light-up shoe didn’t cause Katy car fire

Light-up sneakers blamed for car fire in Katy

KATY, Texas (AP) — Officials have determined that a light-up children’s shoe was not the cause of a vehicle fire in the Houston area in May.

The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office said in a news release that although the investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing, it had eliminated the shoes as the ignition source.

Capt. Dean Hensley said in the news release Monday that it was determined after an examination of the electrical components in the shoes that they “were not a competent ignition source.”

A couple had told television stations about their suspicions the fire in their car could’ve been caused by their 2-year-old’s shoe. Half of one shoe was burned in the fire that burned a hole in the vehicle’s floor. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
