Four Longhorns named to All Big 12 team

UT Soph. Malik Jefferson named Big 12 Defensive Player of the year

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Charlie Strong has a roster loaded with young talent at Texas. That was evident when the Media’s All Big-12 Team was announced on Tuesday and Texas had four sophomores named to the team. Linebacker Malik Jefferson is the headliner, also named pre season Defensive Player of the Year. Cornerback Devante Davis, offensive tackle Connor Williams, and guard Patrick Vahe join Jefferson on that first team. Williams and Vahe will pave the way for a talented tandem of running backs in D’Onta Foreman and Chris Warren.

Jefferson started nine games his freshman season and his 61 tackles was second most on the team. Jefferson has been named 1st Team Preseason All-American by Sporting News. Davis played in all 12 games and led the team with seven pass breakups, with one interception.

Sixty of UT’s 85 scholarship players are freshmen and sophomores.

The question heading into the season is will new offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert’s new offense provide enough punch. Last year Texas was 8th in the Big-12 in scoring offense, averaging 26.4 points per game.

Oklahoma led the all conference selections with nine including quarterback Baker Mayfield (Lake Travis High School), the pre season pick of Offensive Player of the year.

Here is the complete list of All Big-12 selections.
