HOUSTON (AP) — Police say a Houston-area motorcycle officer pursuing two shoplifting suspects in a car has been killed when his motorcycle hit a lawn maintenance trailer parked on a street.

Houston police spokesman Victor Senties says the officer from Bellaire, a west Houston enclave, died Tuesday.

Senties says the officer had been alerted to two men who used a box cutter to remove an anti-theft device to steal something from a nearby Target store.

Senties says the officer rounded a corner “at a pretty high rate of speed,” lost control and struck the trailer.

Authorities are hunting for two men in the car the officer was chasing.

The name of the officer hasn’t been immediately released.
