Portland, Oregon (KGW/KOIN) –  A mother who returned to her home with her two children early Sunday morning shot and killed an intruder who was inside.

The woman, 33, found a stranger in one of her children’s bedrooms in her home at about 1:45 a.m. Sunday.

Armed with a handgun, she shot and killed the suspect, 59-year-old David Daniel McCrary, police said.

An autopsy will be conducted on the suspect Monday and the medical examiner will attempt to notify the McCrary’s family.

Investigators say McCrary has no connection to the family and isn’t from the neighborhood. He doesn’t have a significant criminal history but reportedly struggled with mental health issues in the past, police said.

Neighbor Amber Murray tells KOIN 6 News the home was vacant for a while before the woman and her children moved in.

“I know when the previous renters were there, there was a lot of mischief,” Murray said. “After they moved out I think there were a few squatters in and out of there.”

The woman cooperated with investigators and was not arrested. The investigation, which is ongoing, will determine whether she acted in self defense and if she’ll face charges.
