ORLANDO, FL (WFLA) —A 59-year-old man was arrested at Lake Eola after police said he punched a swan over the weekend.

According to Orlando police, two off-duty officers were walking through the park and stopped to watch a swan and her babies around 7 p.m. Sunday.

Then, a man later identified as Sor Angel Velez walked between the off-duty officers and the swan.

According to a police report, the swan reached out toward Velez as if it were defending its babies. The officers said they saw Velez walk about 10 feet farther, then turn around and walk back toward the swan before punching the bird.

Police said the man began to run but he was caught by the two off-duty officers, who then called police to report the incident.

Velez was arrested on suspicion of injuring wildlife on public property. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 10 days in jail. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
