LIBERTY, Texas (AP) — Southeast Texas authorities say a man was shot to death in his front yard after being lured outside by his burning vehicle.

The Liberty County sheriff’s office says 45-year-old Vincente Rodriguez was shot multiple times early Sunday morning.

Sgt. Paul Lasco says Rodriguez’s wife said they were awakened by someone pounding on their front door. The person asked about buying a lawn mower that was for sale, but the family had no lawn mower for sale.

Lasco says the woman then saw their family van on fire and called her husband. He handed her a fire extinguisher while he filled a large water bottle.

Authorities say that as Rodriguez ran outside, a second man appeared from the darkness and shot him.

The suspects fled in two vehicles.
