AUSTIN (KXAN) — To make way for the construction of a new bridge, all main lanes of Interstate 35 at Slaughter Creek in South Austin will be closed overnight this upcoming weekend.

The Texas Department of Transportation says the closure will run from 11 p.m. until 10 a.m. Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25. During the closure, drivers will still be able to cross I-35 at Onion Creek Parkway or Slaughter Lane.

The closure allows for the crews to demolish the existing bridge. Once demolished, construction will start on a new, wider bridge that will have a turnaround. During the year-long construction, drivers will not be able to use the Slaughter Creek overpass.

Crews are demolishing the existing bridge and starting construction on a new one.
