AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Firefighters Association pledged its “unwavering support” in endorsements of five City Council members, Thursday.

The union endorsed Greg Casar, Sheri Gallo, Delia Garza, Leslie Pool and Don Zimmerman.

Bob Nicks, president of the association, said that since being elected two years ago they have been “energetic and consistent advocates of initiatives to help our city’s firefighters better protect the public from the ravages of fire and other disasters.”

“At the same time,” he continued, “these council members [have] been sensitive to the dangers firefighters face on the job and the need to protect their health and safety.”

The union also acknowledged a “shared vision” for Austin that goes beyond public safety as a reason for the endorsement. “Firefighters are also citizens and we, too, want a strong economy, good schools, safe streets, affordable health care, and a clean environment. We believe that these Council members can best lead this city in the right direction,” Nicks said.

He said the council members have been key in supporting the creation of 5 new fire stations.

Council members Ora Houston, Ann Kitchen, Pio Renteria, Kathie Tovo and Ellen Troxclair were not endorsed by the union because they’re not up for reelection this year.
