PATTON VILLAGE, Texas (AP/KPRC) — A Houston-area officer and a boy died after an SUV carrying the child struck a police car pursuing a suspected drunken driver.
The Department of Public Safety identified the victims of Sunday night’s accident as Patton Village police Sgt. Stacey Baumgartner and 11-year-old Adan Hilario Jr.
DPS says Baumgartner responded to a report of a man urinating in public and was nearly struck by the suspect’s car. As the officer was chasing the Scion being driven by Garrett Nee, 29, he was hit by a driver in a Chevy Suburban at the intersection of Highway 242 and FM 1485.
According to KPRC in Houston, the impact of the crash sent Baumgartner’s cruiser into a pole at the intersection. Baumgartner was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in The Woodlands where he later died. Prosecutors say six other people in the SUV were hospitalized in critical condition.
Nee saw the wreck in his rearview mirror and returned to the scene. He is currently charged with murder in the officer’s death, intoxication manslaughter in both deaths, plus six counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle.
A GoFundMe has been setup to benefit Sgt. Baumgartner’s family.
