Create an Easy Herb Garden at Home

Fresh herbs can make everything taste better—and who better to grow them than you? Colleen Dieter of Red Wheel Barrow plants dropped by the studio to show us how we can get the most out of an herbal container garden. She’ll be the guest speaker at the next meeting of The Austin Herb Society. She showed us a tip for placing a piece of mesh at the bottom of your container to prevent fire ants from setting up shop in your pots. Next, you simply fill the container with potting soil. Then, work your herbs out of the plastic grow pots by placing them between your fingers and turning them upside down. Gently squeeze the bottom of the grow pot to loosen the roots and place them in the container so that the top of the root ball is at the same height. Fill the rest of the way with potting soil, and water in the plants. The Austin Herb Society will hold their next monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 5th at 22-20 Barton Springs Road.
