AUSTIN (KXAN) — People gathered at the University of Texas campus Tuesday night to honor the 49 lives lost in Orlando.

A number of student groups invited people to gather at the UT Tower. A moment of silence was held and the names of the victims were read in remembrance.

As the FBI looks into the shooter’s past, survivors are speaking about the brutal scene they witnessed.

“Bullets started going through the stall wall towards us. I was on the ground in a pool of blood, I wasn’t sure whose it was,” said survivor Angel Santiago, who was held a gunpoint. “I couldn’t walk so I had to drag myself out of the bathroom toward the bar where I was initially, until I saw the face of a police officer.”

Locally, the safety of Austin’s nightlife has come into question. Many are worried about exit plans and code enforcement at crowded Austin-area bars and clubs.
