AUSTIN (KXAN) — The 14-year-old teenager hit and killed by a vehicle in northwest Austin on Tuesday has been identified.
Police say the driver of a Toyota 4 Runner was traveling eastbound on Spicewood Springs Road when it hit Alexei Baureis in the eastbound lanes.
The teen crossed the road at Rustic Rock Drive. The driver had a flashing yellow light while a flashing red light faced Baureis, police said Thursday.
Officers have not determined if he was riding his bicycle or walking it at the time of the crash.
Baureis was taken to Round Rock Hospital where he later died.
The driver stayed at the scene and was “very cooperative,” police said. Dain Johnson, Williamson County Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1, said Wednesday the victim was hit while he and a friend walked their bicycles across a crosswalk. The friend was not hit.
“This is the third child killed by a car while walking or bicycling in Austin in less than a month — that is simply unacceptable and our city leaders need to take action,” Bike Austin said in a statement Wednesday. “While the Austin Police Department has their heart in the right place, calling on bicyclists to wear protective gear in response to this crash is a distraction from the actual threat to children’s safety on our streets: Inadequate bicycle and pedestrian safety infrastructure.”
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit at (512) 974-5594.
