AUSTIN (KXAN) — Three items on Thursday’s council agenda will center around body cameras for the Austin Police Department.
Council will have the opportunity to approve a contract with TASER INTERNATIONAL to provide body worn cameras for APD. Just recently, a $5 million contract for the purchase of smartphones was also added into the mix, the phone services said to “enhance the functionality of body worn cameras.” Council may also direct the city manager to organize stakeholder meetings regarding APD’s policies concerning the public release of body camera video. Postponed.
Additional funding for the Free Weatherization and Customer Assistance Program (CAP) low income weatherization programs:
Austin Energy is seeking approval from council to roll over funding from Fiscal Year 2015 that went unspent for these two programs, meaning $1,040,134 would to go help low income customers needing assistance on their energy bills. The move falls in line with recommendations from the Low Income Consumer Advisory Task Force. Approved.
Funding for homeless women and children:
Amending an agreement with The Salvation Army would allow council to increase funding for homeless social services at the Austin Shelter for Women and Children. Failed.
