(WXIA) Three Georgia police officers are on leave following a potentially deadly 911 mix-up.

The Henry County officers were responding to a 911 call where the caller reported hearing gunshots and a female yelling for help.

When they arrived at the home around 1:30 a.m., they found a 63-year-old man armed with a handgun.

“Preliminary review of the 911 call indicates that the officers were at the wrong location,” the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a release.

According to the release, “officers gave verbal commands for homeowner David Powell to drop his handgun which he did not comply with. An officer fired his weapon, striking Powell in the neck.

GBI spokesperson Scott Dutton said Powell’s wife told investigators on the scene her husband first went outside because dogs were barking. After that, she said he came back in the house to get his gun to go back outside.

Powell was transported to Atlanta Medical Center to be treated for his injuries. He is in critical condition.
