Man captured after Austin State Hospital escape

AUSTIN (KXAN) – A man who was being charged for trespassing, criminal mischief and theft escaped the Austin State Hospital after being taken in for psychiatric evaluation.

On June 2nd, around 9 p.m., Brian Phillip Morris, 29, escaped the hospital by climbing a tree in the recreation yard, jumping to the roof then down the other side of the building. He then fled the area.

A hospital staff member on break reported seeing Morris about a half hour later at a convenience store. When the staff member told Morris he had to go back, he ran away.

Authorities eventually located and re-apprehended Morris and booked him into the Travis County Jail on June 3rd, according to jail records.

He now faces an additional Escape from Custody Charge.

In the fiscal year of 2015, Austin State Hospital had 14 such unauthorized departures.
