BASTROP, Texas (KXAN) — A new bridge in Bastrop is under construction after city, county and state officials took part in a groundbreaking ceremony, Thursday.
The new overpass on State Highway 71 will create a four-lane bridge to carry traffic from SH 71 over the State Highway 95 intersection. According to a press release by the Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Senator Kirk Watson and officials from the city of Bastrop and Bastrop County joined the public at Buc-ee’s Travel Center to break ground on the $16.5 million project.
“The overpass at SH 95 and SH 71 will achieve the twin goals of reducing congestion and improving highway safety, eliminating a significant bottleneck for Bastrop County residents,” said Sen. Kirk Watson.
Two frontage roads will also be added as part of the project, which is supposed to be completed by summer of 2018. Ultimately, the overpass will cut traffic delays currently caused by traffic lights on the highway.
“This is a great day for Bastrop County,” said County Judge Paul Pape. “This intersection is the epicenter of the commerce and industry of the county and we’re pleased to have this improvement coming here.”
