Drafthouse’s gender-neutral bathroom suggestions result in 2 options

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Last week, word of the Alamo Drafthouse planning a gender-neutral bathroom for the upcoming Mueller location got plenty of notice around not only Austin, but the whole country.

Suggestions and criticism poured in and, through it, Founder Tim League and Architect Richard Weiss were able to develop two potential layouts.

“We had a lot of detailed and insightful feedback on the initial design, much of which we will attempt to incorporate,” League said on a Facebook post which asked people to choose which they liked best.

The first has sinks in each of the stalls, the second has communal sinks with mirrors in the individual stalls. As League wrote, Option A is built for privacy, Option B is built for speed.

League also offered some insight to the much discussed ‘all-gender urinals.’

“There’s going to be a room of urinals, labeled as such, ‘urinals,'” League wrote. “We’re not going to stop women from dropping trou and giving the urinals a go, but I really doubt that’s going to happen all that often. Were I to guess, I’d say 1 in 500. I assume most if not all women will opt for the stalls.”

League said construction has already started.
