Brigade commander from Georgetown prepares for deployment

CAMP SWIFT, Texas (KXAN) — A Texas Army National Guard colonel from Georgetown is heading to the Middle East with his brigade.

Colonel Charles M. Schoening, 176th Engineer Brigade Commander, practiced for his deployment ceremony Wednesday at Camp Swift.

“We’ve spent the last two-and-a-half weeks doing our pre-mobilization tasks, building our team… They are excited about the opportunity to serve their country,” Schoening said.

Most of the guard soldiers are from the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

“I think there are things we value as citizens and solders and that includes the fact that we live in the greatest country on the world and were able to give something back — that were able to give service that continues to protect those freedoms we enjoy here at home,” he continued.

The brigade’s mission is to provide engineer support for U.S. Central Command.
