AUSTIN (KXAN) – A father from Buda was prepared to see baseballs hit his windshield on Saturday but not rocks.

James Joseph was driving up Interstate 35 to his sons’ baseball tournament in Round Rock when someone threw a rock that hit his car. Neither he nor his two sons were injured.

Police said the latest rock throwing case happened near Lady Bird Lake around 6:40 a.m. Saturday, May 28.

Within seconds, Joseph said he knew it was a rock that hit his truck. He immediately pulled over to make sure his boys were fine.

Joseph told KXAN he was already planning to take the upper deck of Interstate 35 because of stories about rock throwing. Now he plans to avoid I-35 all together.

“It was very shocking. I was even more shocked to find out how lucky we really were,” said Joseph. ” I mean, minor scrapes from broken glass and things like that.”

The incident happened one day after Governor Greg Abbott announced a $6,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the rock thrower. That was in addition to the $10,000 offered by the Austin Crime Commission. The reward increased to a total of $20,000 after a donation was offered anonymously on Sunday, according to a tweet by Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo.

This is the 84th case of rock throwing police are investigating since June 1, 2014. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
