AUSTIN (KXAN) – Firefighters had a little help from above after an abandoned building caught fire in East Austin.

They were called out to the 1200 block of East 7th Street at about 9:20 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived, flames were shooting through the roof of the abandoned home.

Firefighters told KXAN recent rain helped stop the fire from spreading to other nearby buildings like the Hightower Restaurant.

The abandoned home is a total loss, according to Austin firefighters.

A source with the fire department says the owners were remodeling the home, and it is a known homeless hangout.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what started the fire.
