Sales tax holiday offers discounts on energy, water saving upgrades

AUSTIN (KXAN) — If you have been thinking about doing some home improvements, you will be able to save some money on purchases during Memorial weekend.

The state is offering a sales tax holiday on energy and water saving upgrades from Saturday, May 28 through Monday, May 30. State comptroller Glenn Hegar joined us in the KXAN studio to discuss the savings.

The tax holiday is for energy star appliances, such as air conditioners, light bulbs, and ceiling fans. There will also be tax free discounts on water-efficient and conserving products.

“My office estimated a little less than $9 million that Texans can save on state sales tax as well as local sales tax,” said Hegar.

Tax-free water products:

  • Recharging water tables
  • Drip-irrigation hoses
  • Soaker hoses
  • Moisture control for sprinkler irrigation system
  • Mulch
  • Plants
  • Trees
  • Grasses
  • Water-saving surfactants
  • Rain barrels
  • Moisture collection systems
  • Items for decreasing ambient air temperature

Editor’s Note: Hegar mentioned water heaters in his interview but those are not included during this tax free weekend.
