AUSTIN (KXAN) — Police have released photos of the driver who hit and killed a 3-year-old in East Austin before fleeing the scene.
The images were captured by a camera on a Capital Metro bus that happened to be sitting at a bus stop near the intersection of Cameron Road just south of Briarcliff Boulevard at the time. Police say it did not capture the crash, just the truck.
The suspect was driving a 2000s Chevy Silverado 2500 HD pickup truck when he hit Ethan Hernandez Sunday afternoon. The young boy was legally crossing the street with his family at Briarcliff and Cameron Road.
“The light turned red, and the walking signal turned for us to cross. Then my kid ran across, the pickup didn’t yield and hit my kid and dragged him underneath,” explains Ethan’s father Carlos Hernandez.
Ethan was taken to Dell Children’s Hospital where he died a short time later.
Julia Ortiz lives at the house seen in the background of the surveillance photos. She spends a lot of time sitting outside watching cars go by. Ortiz told KXAN she recognizes the truck, and used to see it go by every morning and night.
“I haven’t seen him in three days,” said Ortiz.
Ortiz said she zeroed in on the cowboy hat sitting on the dashboard. “That’s what’s telling me that’s the man right there,” she said.
Meanwhile, a group of young girls were going door-to-door Wednesday at the apartment complex where the Hernandez family lives collecting cash.
“What we’re trying to do is raise money to buy the rock to put on his grave,” said fourth grader Marissa Jaimesarroyo.
She was keeping track of the donations by writing names down in a small notebook while her friend held the plastic bucket they decorated with a taped-on Thomas the Train toy and a photo of Ethan.

Austin City Council member Greg Casar, who represents District 4 where Ethan was hit, says the area is home to some of the most dangerous intersections in Austin.
