DEL VALLE, Texas (KXAN) — Teachers at Del Valle Elementary School found a new way to encourage young students to read.

After each student read a book, they would write the title, author and their thoughts on a strip of paper. Teachers made those strips into a paper chain.

Students turned out for a celebration to unveil their book chain on Wednesday.

“It makes me love my job even more… It’s just magical,” Jennifer Eberly, assistant principal at Del Valle Middle School, said, dressed as book character “Fancy Nancy.”

Students read so many books that the chain wrapped around the school.

Fifth grader Corinne Ward said, “It has lifted kids in reading, it’s encouraged them to read more than they have.”

Many of the students wore costumes at Wednesday’s assembly, representing their favorite characters in the books they’ve read. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
