AUSTIN (KXAN) — More than a year after Austin’s new rules for gender-neutral bathrooms took effect, customers of some Austin businesses are still seeing problems.

The city’s rules state that single-use commercial bathrooms can not be for men only or women only, they must have a gender-neutral sign.

KXAN News requested a list of all the reports to Austin’s 311 information line about gender-neutral bathroom signs. The city has received roughly 80 complaints, mainly reporting businesses not complying with the rules. However, one person also pointed to frustration with how a business implemented their interpretation of city rules. The person reported that a business had a women’s room and a gender-neutral restroom, but no room solely for men.

“It’s not even one full restroom for men! This to me is insanity,” wrote someone who complained via email to Austin 311.

The Austin Code Department also has heard 67 complaints about possible bathroom sign violations. Of those, a spokesperson says several cases have resulted in warnings. However, the department has not referred any potential violations for legal action.
