AUSTIN (KXAN) – Court documents released Sunday reveal Friday’s deadly shooting outside a southeast Austin H-E-B grocery store was drug-related.
Austin Police say 19-year-old John Paul Montoya and two other people went to the lot to sell drugs to people in a car with four people.
After getting out of their car, Montoya and another man got out of their car. Police say the man with Montoya started arguing with the people from the car about owing him money, leading to a fight.
During the fight, detectives say Montoya returned to his car and pulled a gun out of a backpack and opened fire.
Two of the people from the other car were hit, including 32-year-old Jeffry Lopez, who died. The other man hit was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge for treatment.
If convicted, Montoya could face up to 99 years in prison.
