KYLE, Texas (KXAN) — One man is dead after a crash Sunday morning on Interstate 35 in Kyle. Police say he was the suspect in a hit-and-run earlier on an I-35 access road.

According to Kyle Police Chief Jeff Barnett, just before 1 a.m., officers responded to I-35 northbound at the 217 exit ramp for a multiple vehicle crash, with reports of at least one vehicle rolled over.

“Witnesses on the scene told our officers that a male subject was ejected from his vehicle and appeared to be deceased,” Barnett said.

His name is not being released until police notify next of kin, but police believe he may be from Mexico with ties in the Kyle area.

Just before the crash, police say the man’s pickup truck was involved in a hit-and-run at Bebee Road and the southbound I-35 access road.

Police say the man hit a white Chevrolet driven by a woman from Kyle, before leaving the scene. She wasn’t injured in the crash.

After the hit-and-run, police say the man drove northbound on the frontage road, before crashing through the median onto the main lanes of I-35 and the exit 217 ramp.

The man, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was ejected. A Volkswagen Jetta, driven by a man from Austin, hit the man’s pickup truck moments later.

“The impact from the Volkswagen hitting the green Chevrolet caused the bed of the pickup to come free of the cab, essentially becoming debris in the road,” Barnett said. “A white Toyota Camry and a green Toyota Camry then both hit the bed of the pickup as they were swerving to avoid the crash.”

The Volkswagen driver was taken to an Austin area hospital with non life-threatening injuries. He was treated and released.

Crews shut down the highway for two hours following the crash. It’s unclear if alcohol played a factor.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call the Kyle Police Department.
