AUSTIN (KXAN) — A suspect is in custody after a man was shot and killed at an HEB in Southeast Austin.
According to APD, it began with a 911 call claiming people were shouting in the parking lot of the HEB at Riverside Drive and Pleasant Valley Road at 1:45 a.m. They say one man in his 20s died at the scene from gunshot wounds. A second person was also shot and transported to UMC Brackenridge with serious injuries. A third person was hit with some sort of object.
The suspect took off on foot after the shooting, but he was later found by police. Officers say charges will be filed in the next day or so.
“There appears there were multiple types of weapons involved and I am not going to go into detail as far as what those were however we did locate at least one weapon on scene,” says Marcos Davis, Sr. Austin Police Officer. Davis says all the people involved knew eacho ther.
“It’s not 100 percent clear what that relationship was but they were here very specifically for a purpose and there was no business conducted inside the HEB everything happened in the parking lot,” says Davis.
Much of the HEB parking lot was sealed off with police tape overnight while the investigation took place. HEB reopened its store at 6 a.m. and police opened up more of the parking lot for customers.
Neighbors in the area say communities need to look at crime as a problem they can fix simply by treating others like you’d want to be treated.
“No one wants to see their mother, grandmother, aunt, friend, girlfriend, roommate, hurt or anything and it’s something that we should all take heed in and that’s up to us,” Jamarious Hinderman, a neighbor said.
According to the Austin Police Department this is the seventh shooting related call in this particular area since 2011.
Since the beginning of the year, there have been 31 injury assaults, 11 aggravated robberies with a deadly weapon and 381 calls for theft.
This is the second homicide in Austin in less than one week. Last Saturday, a man was shot to death during a get-together in North Austin.
