AUSTIN (KXAN) — A large memorial now sits at the corner of Gault Drive and West Anderson Lane in North Austin where a 5-year-old boy was hit and killed while crossing the street on Friday.

Police say Uriel Garcia was running to his apartment complex when he was hit by a driver in a van around 2:20 p.m. The driver stayed at the scene and initial police information indicates charges are unlikely.

The Austin Police Department is urging parents to make sure their children are next to them when near roadways and that they should cross at cross walks after looking both ways.

The memorial has photographs of Uriel along with numerous stuffed animals. People also placed candles, balloons and notes.

A spokesperson for the Austin Independent School District says counselors will be at Wooten Elementary School, where Uriel went to school, on Monday morning.
