TAMPA, FL (WFLA) – Hayley Lidey won’t be selling any sick puppies on Craigslist this weekend.
The 23-year-old Riverview woman is in the Hillsborough County Jail for violating her probation on an unrelated matter.
Earlier this week 8 On Your Side revealed Lidey is a convicted felon on probation for fraud and tied to the sale of a puppy on Craigslist, a transaction that broke the hearts of Chris and Shawn Tomaras.
“Within five days of us having him, we had to put him to sleep because of parvo,” said Shawn.
Hayley’s father Brian Lidey expressed anger about our report.
“I just watched the disgusting portrayal of how Channel 8 made viewers believe my daughter is this life long criminal and horrible person,” Brian Lidey wrote in an email.
Chris Tomaras doesn’t think very highly of her. In April he responded to an ad on Craigslist offering a puppy for about $150 dollars. Hayley, using a phony name, contacted Chris via text.
“When I texted her, I asked her about the shots, she said that the puppy had health certificates, that she could provide it to me directly,” explained Chris.
The Tomarases immediately fell in love with baby Leo. Almost as quickly they learned they’d been had. There was no health certificate, no shots, just a grim diagnosis.
“I don’t know how to explain to my 2-year-old why the dog is dead,” said Chris.
Hayley’s father claims she is a victim here too.
“She actually bought the puppy in question from another person who told her it was health certified,” Brian Lidey wrote in his email. “What does someone think they are going to get off Craigslist!”
“This was just a baby,” remembered Shawn. “He hadn’t even started living yet and he trusted us and I feel like I failed him, it’s just heartbreaking.”
“Sorry those people got a sick puppy,” wrote Brian Lidey. “She should have handled the situation and refund(ed) the money.”
He claims his daughter has mental problems and is depressed. Because she has a criminal record it is difficult for her to find a job. According to the Department of Corrections, Hayley Lidey violated her probation by failing to pay court-ordered restitution, failing to comply with a random drug test, as well as failing to pay court costs and for court-ordered supervision. Lidey insists his daughter has rescued several puppies.
“This was blown way out of proportion my daughter is a very sweet kind animal lover she would not ever hurt any dog intentionally,” he wrote. “Anyone who puts puppies through this knowingly, is not an animal lover, not at all, they are just out for a quick buck,” said Shawn.
