SAN ANTONIO, Texas (KXAN) — The 2016 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards ceremony was held Friday, May 13 in San Antonio.

Among the statewide winners were many of the Austin area’s own.

Leander ISD won best large school district, beating four other school districts. Along with the title, Leander received a $100,000 grant.

The Lifetime Achievement award is given to teachers with more than 20 years of experience.

This year’s award went to Laurie Holmes from Popham Elementary in Del Valle ISD. She was awarded $25,000 for herself, plus another $25,000 for her school.

Westlake High’s Mark Misage won the Lifetime Achievement award in the secondary category. He also received $25,000 for himself and $25,000 for his school.

A panel of judges choos the winners following visits with nominees and nominated districts.

The awards were launched by H-E-B and the Texas Association of School Administrators in 2002 as a way to support public education.

According to TASA, this is the largest monetary recognition program for educators in Texas and one of the largest in the nation.
