AUSTIN (KXAN) — A section of road in central Austin was blocked Wednesday while crews worked on capping a gas leak.

The gas leak happened just before 10 a.m. in the 1400 block of E. 38th 1/2 Street. Traffic was diverted onto Werner Avenue while crews worked on repairing the problem.

Officials said the repair was expected to take several hours. Three nearby buildings were evacuated. Staff at Maplewood Elementary moved students from portables to a different part of campus.
