AUSTIN (KXAN) — While getting on a carnival ride might seem like all fun and games, the emergency crews with the Austin Fire Department know that a ride can turn into a dire situation at any moment.

On Wednesday, firefighters practiced several emergency scenarios that could happen on a carnival ride. In one of the situations, firefighters rescued an unconscious person from a Ferris wheel. In another situation, crews rescued a person from a ride that stalled.

“We’re always looking for opportunities to train especially on things that don’t happen very often,” says fire specialist Tyson Poindexter. He says while he’s never had to make this type of rescue in real life, it always better to be prepared.

The Austin Fire Department was able to conduct the exercise with the help of Crabtree Amusements Carnival, which is currently in town.
