AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin ISD Boad is trying to get more money for buses to help kids who have a dangerous walk to and from school.

District officials say students at 65 out of 130 schools face a treacherous walk to school everyday. Casis Elementary, Murchison Middle School and others have six or more hazardous areas nearby.

In many cases there are not sidewalks for kids to walk on. Once the school board signs off on the list, they can apply for state funding to provide those kids with a safe bus ride home.

Earlier this year, a KXAN investigation found many parents are worried about their child’s walk or ride to school. Parents have filed at least 450 complaints with the city in the last three years.
