Fire damages church in Southeast Austin

Riverside fire - Austin Fire Department

AUSTIN (KXAN) — One building at a church in Southeast Austin sustained damage after a fire broke out Sunday evening.

The Austin Fire Department says the call came in just before 9 p.m. at the Onion Creek Baptist Church at 8214 Riverside Drive. When firefighters arrived on scene they discovered heavy flames showing from the roof of the church.

The church rents out its buildings and facilities to two other churches and it appears one of those buildings belonged to another church. AFD says the building’s roof also collapsed.

The fire was put out by 10:30 p.m.

No one was inside the church when the fire broke out.

Damage estimates total $700,000 for the structure and contents. Fire investigators were unable to determine a cause. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
