Enchanted Rock goes solar powered, reduces energy use by 50%

FREDERICKSBURG, Texas (KXAN) – Enchanted Rock State Natural Area has taken steps to reduce energy use and enhance the park by installing a solar array to the park’s headquarters.

Park officials say the 12-kilowatt array will reduce energy use by fifty percent, lowering costs and allowing for more park enhancements. They flipped the switch at a ceremony Thursday.

Visitors will be able to learn about sustainability and alternative energy before checking out the rock.

Green Mountain Energy Sun Club donated the money for the new power source.

Green Mountain Energy Sun Club has donated the funds used to purchase and install a 12-kilowatt solar array for the park’s headquarters. The solar array offsets about 50 percent of the park’s energy usage, resulting in reduced energy costs and more park enhancements. The addition of the solar array at the park’s welcome center will allow visitors to learn about sustainability and alternative energy before they start exploring this natural wonder.
