AUSTIN (KXAN) — While they might not be kings of the jungle, two new permanent additions to the Austin Zoo could probably take over as “princes of the jungle.”
The non-profit rescue zoo and animal sanctuary recently took in two Transvaal lions named Sango and Jelani. The littermates are almost 3 years old and were recently living at Tucson’s Reid Park Zoo, which is currently undergoing renovations.
“We are fortunate that we had the space available to provide these lions a place to live comfortably so that renovations can take place to their former home at Reid Park Zoo,” said Patti Clark, executive director of Austin Zoo. “We welcome Sango and Jelani to our family, and we look forward to sharing these beautiful animals with the public as we further our mission to educate and inform.”
With the addition of Sango and Jelani, the zoo now has a total of four big cats.
The lions will spend this week getting situated; viewing for the lions will begin Saturday, April 16.
The Austin Zoo is open daily from 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. (until 5:30 p.m. during the winter).
