Softball-sized hail rips through roofs in North Texas

Hail in Collin County

WYLIE, Texas (KXAN) — Numerous homes in North Texas are covered in blue tarps after a hail storm pummeled the Colling County area Monday afternoon.

The softball-sized hail crashed through windows and into homes. The hail managed to rip through several roofs. Home video shows hail pounding a parking lot and the force almost took out the asphalt.

The Wylie Independent School District also suffered widespread hail damage but says it plans to resume classes Wednesday.

KXAN’s sister station in Dallas, KXAS, spoke to a man who said he his family was sitting in their living room when hail came crashing through their roof and ceiling.

“Through the attic, through 5/8-inch sheet rock, and then hit the floor and you still have this size left,” Nelson Graves said, holding a golf-ball sized piece of hail. “I’ve been in Texas almost 34 years and that’s probably the most devastating hail I’ve ever seen.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
