AUSTIN (KXAN) — Del Valle students are learning to analyze DNA.

It’s part of the high school forensic science classes.

So far, they’ve successfully extracted DNA from cells of strawberries.

When you see people watching like the First 48 or CSI, you think it’s very easy, but it’s actually a long, long process. You have to do a lot of testing. And you can’t mess up.

In order to pull the DNA out of the strawberry, they had to puree it, add a solution to break open the cells, filter it and finally add alcohol to filtrate it.
