AUSTIN (KXAN) — For one driver, the blinking lights and bright red paint wasn’t enough for the driver to avoid running into a school bus’ stop-arm Friday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Austin Independent School District says a bus that was transporting Kealing Middle School students around 3:45 p.m. was hit by a truck on South First Street at Powell Circle. The bus was stopped and the stop-arm was extended but the driver failed to stop and ran into the sign.

There were three students on the bus at the time. No one was injured.

Earlier this year, AISD outfitted 300 buses with stop-arm camera technology, to help catch drivers who don’t stop for stopped school buses. The district started ticketing drivers who illegally pass in February. Within the first month of the program—when warnings were issued, not citations—cameras captured nearly 1,000 violators. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
