Texas DPS trooper killed in on-duty crash

TIGERTOWN, Texas (KXAN) – A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper on duty was killed in a crash Saturday in Lamar County according to the agency.

Trooper Jeffrey Nichols was driving westbound on FM 38 about 12 miles west of Paris, Texas, when he crashed into a tree. The crash happened just before 11:00 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators could not say what exactly led up to the crash. Nichols was on patrol at the time.

Other drivers on the road were the first to tell police about the crash.

Nichols was 27 years old and had been with DPS since 2011. He was stationed in Paris. DPS officials said Nichols is survived by his parents.

Visitation for law enforcement and emergency services personnel only will be held Wednesday, March 29, from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. at the Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home located at 730 Clarksville Street, Paris, TX 75460). The public visitation will be 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

The funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lamar Avenue Church of Christ. The church is located at 3535 Lamar Ave., Paris, TX 75460. There will be no interment.
